CHAPTER - 11
The Movements of Yogis are mysterious. Nothing they do without a purpose. It may be to establish peace in the strife-ridden society by creating among the public a sense of awareness of the virtues of Sanatana Dharma and indirectly helping them get rid of superstitions. We have to observe all those things very keenly. We may be surprised to see some magic and immediately feel happy. But that is only a flash reaction. Finally it is only the sayings of great men that will leave an indelible impression on our minds and bliss eternal on us. Even in the absence of the physical body of the Yogi, the effect of his teachings the path shown by him, will have a permanent effect on the humanity. Viewed in that light the message given by Viswayogi acquires added significance. They are reflected in this chapter. Steps are being taken to bring out a separate book on Viswamjee’s gospel and message.
Masterji’s discourses are simple and to the point and are interesting interlaced with illustrations, and stories from the epics, etc., He makes the even complex concepts very simple and thus attracts the scholar as well as the layman. He is a powerful orator having been endowed with a melodious voice and sweet tongue to capture the attention of the audience.
Masterji’s sole aim is protection of our age (age-old) ancient culture or Sanatana Dharma. That particular Dharma which was in existence before the emergence of so many religions and before the birth of so many preceptors or prophets. Truthfulness, moral character, purity and integrity or unity are the four pillars of Sanatana Dharma. Family is the root for Sanatana Dharma. First of all the individual should be reformed. Through him the family and finally the society can be reformed. Protection has to identify the human values, adopt them, nurture and nourish them in his day to day life. Only then, it is possible for him to exist as a human being. Now a days is the man conducting himself like a human being? Asks Viswamjee Does he know what to eat and how to eat? Does he know how to keep his body healthy? He intends to keep up good health and wants to lead a happy and peaceful life. But in practice he is not able to do so. What is the cause? His ignorance is the root cause for this. Then also his indiscriminate behavior. At the outset, his ignorance should be destroyed. The purpose of philosophy is only to bring about unity in the world. Hence the motto of Viswamandir is “Body is the temple and the Heart the Sanctorum”.
‘World is on illusion’ (‘Jagath Midhya’) means Jagath keeps on changing. It does not mean that Jagath is not there at all. In case, those who want to argue that “Jagath Midhya” means “Jagath does not exist”, they have to address them selves to three points. Firstly, if Jagath (universe) does not exist, there is no need for Bhagavan Vishnu to incarnate so many times? The purpose of incarnation is only to protect the good and destroy the evil on Earth. So Jagath is not a myth. It does exist. Being neither steady nor eternal it is subject to change. Secondly why did the Sages like Vasista, Vidyaranya, Samardha Ramadas serve and guide the kings and other rules without confining themselves to ponder over the Atma and Paramatma? So world can not be myth in any case. We have to be grateful to those great sages for the noble ideas and guidelines they have left behind as legacy for the welfare of the society.
Now the third question. Adi Sankara called Jagath Midhya in a particular context. People were quarreling among themselves that one God was superior to the others. Adi Sankara solved the problem by offering the method of “Panchayatanam” and established integrity among worshippers of Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesh, Sun and Shakti. If Jagath (universe) was not to exist at all what for did Shankara take so much of pain?
Hence the main aim of our Yogis and Maharshis is to accept the existence of Jagath (universe) and strive for its understanding and thereby the development of the society.
While describing the goal of human beings, many philosophers often refer to the seawater. Due to the Sun’s heat, seawater gets evaporated and turns into clouds. These clouds travel over a long distance in the sky before finally getting transformed into rain, which falls on all places not excluding mountains and forests. That rainwater flows like a stream, then a river, which finally again reaches sea from where it started its course originally. In the same way, human being also gets separated from God and that eternal portion of God takes birth as human being with Bhagavadamsa. He, after traversing the cycle of births and deaths several times finally reaches back God, the destination that was also the origin.
Those people who speak like that ignore one important aspect. It is a fact that the rain water becomes the river, but the whole amount of rain water is not reaching the sea, whether it is in the form of rain or river water has become very essential for the very existence of life and growth on earth. Trees, crops and all living beings owe their existence to water. For quenching thirst water is essential. Apart from drinking and cooking purposes, water is a must for agriculture and irrigation. It is only after thus serving the world in ways more than one that the water that was left over joins the sea from where it originated.
In the same way man should live a worthy life by making himself useful to the world. He should be a life of service and sacrifice and should be beneficial to the society. One who leads a selfish life living only for his own sake can never reach God after death. Rebirth is certain for him. Why did God incarnate and appear on earth? He came in the form of a human being in order to serve the society. Electricity passes through a wire. It will not glow on its own. A bulb is needed for it to give light. Through the bulb, electricity is converted into light. Human being is just like that bulb. Divine power is revealed only through human being.
In order to make everyone know, how valuable and scared is the life of a human being, God incarnates himself in the form of a human being. God incarnates himself in the form of a human being. In fact, what is the meaning of incarnation? It is a mistake to assume that God came down to the earth from Vaikuntham when he was requested by all the other Gods and Goddesses, sages and saints, devotees and Siddapurushas who were around him. The way God incarnated is very much different form this line of thinking.
If we believe that God is Omnipotent, Omnipresent and possesses cosmic electromagnetic power we have to find out a convincing reason and a realistic argument for his incarnation.
What is the goal of human being’s life? According to Science, evolution of man started with monocellular particle. Western Scientists say that there is no further evolution after human being. But the ancient sages did a lot of research and advocated the theory that there was a further process from humanity to divinity. The goal of human life is to reach that divinity (Chaitanya Sakti).
Universe is Vishnu Swarupam. Yoga means union. Just as the human being has a mind so also the Universe. That person who can unite his mind with the Universal mind is a Yogi. Yogi can do anything. He can stop the airplane flying in the sky. He can bring somebody else’s sufferings on himself and tolerate. Russian Scientists have confirmed this truth.
That was the time when there were neither books nor even palm leaves. Then how could the Maharshis store their knowledge? It is not fair to say that initially they got everything memorized by their students and thereafter got it transferred to palm leaves. The fact of the matter is that they stored their knowledge through vibrations. Hence ancient Dharma is eternal. That is Sanatana Dharma.
You observe what the Veda Rishis said in their instructions. They said, “Vishnu is Universe. The world is the manifestation of God. God exists in this world. Hence we should never ignore this world. If we love and worship Universe and Nature, it will be like worshipping Vishnu. “Atmavat Sarva Bhutani” You look at all the elements on par with you. “Iswara Sarva Bhutani Hriddesrjuna Tishti” Bhagavan said in Bhagavatgita that he would stay in all the elements and the hearts of all beings. What do you learn form this? All the living things and human beings should be considered as personification of God. People are striving for the welfare of the society and all the elements. Hence we can conclude that Bharatiya Dharmam cannot be there without society.
Body is the temple and heart is the divine seat. (Viswayogi Viswamjee’s message given on the occasion of Hanumanjayanti on 10-5-1988).
There is no one particular name in God. The power which leis in everyone is God. We are praying and worshiping that power. He is omnipresent. He is everywhere. He was born in Dwapara Yuga as Sri krishna, an embodiment of love. Again that embodiment of love is appearing to us in the form of Sri Sai. Sai Bhagavan is spreading the message of love (Prematatvam) attracting the intelligentsia of the entire world.
The whole world is filled with one divine power. That is Omnipotent and Omnipresent. That power is there in every living thing, and in every human being. That power is there in every atom also.
Without realizing this, Human being thinks that God is very far from him. It is a misnomer. Due to that misconception he is not able to love all human beings alike. He even hates some. Sanatana Bharatiya Dharma never sponsored or tolerated mutual hatred.
What is meant by Viswarupam? If a man of six feet height increases the size of his body, occupies the earth, and grows till the sky, is it known as Viswarupam? No, it isn’t. Whatever divinity is there in one atom, the same divinity is present in the entire universe. There is a nucleus in every atom. Electrons and protons rotate around it with a high speed. In a similar way, planets rotate very quickly around the sun. Smallest form of universal family it atom. Matter is formed by union of so many atoms. The whole universe is like this. The word ‘You’ means, the divine power of this atom. Everything is there in you. You are everything. There is no place without you. All of you realize this truth.
If there is some disturbance in nature it is reflected everywhere. If atom rests in peace, disturbance in nature will become less. In order to bring peace in the atom, Ekadasa Rudrabhishekas and Archanas are performed to Shiva. Shiva linga stands for universe.
Family is the main pillar as per Sanatana Dharma. Development of family can be achieved only through that of the members concerned. The aim of Sanatana Dharma was to make the society progress through that of its members, concerned. The aim of Sanatana Dharma was to make the society progress through that of its members, namely families. Now a days people are getting physically and emotionally separated in the name of castes and religions. They have to be integrated through spirituality. Thus spirituality should be made instrumental for the uplift of the society.
Body is the temple and heart is the seat of divinity. What is the use of these poojas? If you can integrate the Chaitanya Sakti in you with the divine power you will be turned into a center of power.
In every human being Itchasakti is in the heart. Gnanasakti (power of knowledge intellect) is in the mind, and kriya sakti (power of action) is centered in the spinal chord.
These are Vishnu, Brahma and Maheswaras respectively the manifestation of their union is Dattatreya. If every human being worships Atri and Anasuya scrupulously keeping himself away from vices like jealousy, divine power will come under his control. That is what is called attainment of the state of Dattatreya.
Aspirant, through strict practice of yoga gradually cuts through or conquers all the three grandhis namely Hridgrandhi, Chithgrandhi and atmagrandhi. The through six circles (Shatchakras) he will integrate his mental power with that of the universe. There after he will establish paramount contact with the divine electro magnetic power pervading the universe. This called Yoga. With all the power in the universe thus centered in him Yogi becomes personification of power (Shakti) and utilizes that power (Shakti) for the good of the society.
Some people may ask, “why should we have idol worship?” Swamy Vivekananda illustrates it convincingly. “If we want to drink milk we need a cup or similar vessel for containing the milk. It is not possible to drink water without the help of a cup or glass. After drinking from it, we preserve it that it may be used by others when needed. We will never throw it away. So is the idol for a worshipper.
Divine power is just like electricity, we cannot see it directly. We make use of it for Radio, Tube light, fan, air conditioner etc., according to our requirement. Similarly we are trying to understand the divine power in the limited form of an idol.
Many question, “ Are there any miracles? There are no miracles as such. Listen to me carefully. Everyday doctors undertake hundreds of operations. There are crores of people who cannot do it. It looks like a surprise and a miracle for those who are unable to do such operations. It is normal one for a doctor who learnt to do operations. Doctors do operations, while engineers wonderfully construct buildings. Somebody else does something else. Some Yogis walk on water. That is natural for them. Yet for other those are all miracles. If we are also given training we too can perform such feats.
Mantram makes the person a center of infinite power. All of you chant the mantra “Om Sri Ram Guru Deva Datta” very regularly and systematically and with concentration. If not this, you can choose any other
mantra and concentration on it.
Where there is unity there is divine power., Unity is strength. We have to think, “how best we can be useful to others” By 2001 A.D India is going to lead the world. We have prepare spiritually and materially in order to rise to that occasion.
There is no use of performing so many rituals without having good conduct and right thinking. God exists in the human being. This world is not an illusion. This is manifestation of parabrahma, the Omnipresent God. Hence we cannot afford to ignore it. In fact we have to mould ourselves to be useful to society.
For one who had boldly faced great ordeals in life, small ones are of no concern. As long as mind is alert, one does not feel the stresses and strains of the physical body. Mind is of the essence for anything.
As is the mind so is the man. If the mind is tensionless, one can undertake any amount of hard work. If a person possesses knowledge of Sculpture in his mind, he will become a sculptor. So also if a man fills his mind with knowledge of engineering, he become an Engineer. When an individual fills his mind with the knowledge of Surgery, he becomes a Surgeon. Sometimes he plays the role of a father and kisses his child. As a citizen, he reads newspapers and talks eloquently about politics. Once he enters the operation theatre, he brings his mind under his control and performs operations very efficiently.
The expertise that is manifest at the time of his performing the operation is nothing but divine power. That is possible because of the integration of his individual mind with the universal mind.
In this way whenever any individual mind manifests expertise in a particular area, that will draw infinite strength and energy from the divine power.
Once a lady came to Masterji and narrated him her tale of woe as follows. Her husband’s drinking habit at any cost. She visited Masterji times repeatedly requesting him to come to her rescue.
Masterji advised her thus “When your husband starts drinking your son, your daughter and yourself enter his room and take the bottle from his hands telling him that you too would like to drink. With that your husband stops drinking.” She went home and did accordingly. It had a positive impact on her husband and the family became normal. Subsequently she again visited Masterji to thank him. The he commented like this. “However cruel may be the husband, he desires that his wife and children should not drink. We have to remember that there is hidden wisdom even in those who appear to be rogues”.
Another day some youngsters, having communist ideas came to Masterji. They questioned Masterji on several aspects, which were answered by him cheerfully with tremendous patience. When the topic regarding the superiority of Brahmins came, they critically criticized then and said, “Swami, these Brahmins have a superiority complex. In order to belittle poor sudras, they wrote that Brahmins took their birth from the mouth of Brahma and Sudras from the feet of Brahma. It is justifiable? Is it not the root cause for the internal conflicts in the society?” They thought that they silenced Swamiji.
Masterji pitted their ignorance and answered their queries thus, “From physiological point of view human beings can be divided into four types. Based on psychological aspect and physical and mental stamina of human beings and their inherent tastes and instincts four fold varna system came into vogue. It was never aimed at creating disunity in the society. Intelligentsia who form the first type of individuals in the system are named Brahmins. They are expected to utilize their intelligence of shastras for the development of the society. They are said to have emerged form the head of Viratpurusha. Then comes the second category of individuals who possess martial qualities and by nature hold and chivalrous and therefore, fit by all means to rule, defend and protect the country, They are given the name Kshatriyas. They are born from the shoulders of Viratpurusha.
Then there is the third category of individuals whoa re capable of producing food. It is the duty of Vaishyas to earn as much as possible generating wealth by means of agriculture thighs of Viratpurusha and are named Vaishyas. The fourth category consists of individuals who are blessed with good physique, huge capacity to work efficiently braving the sun and weather for the good of the society. Their service to the society is so essential that the society cannot stand without them. They are believed to have been born from the feet of Viratpursha are called Sudras. These four distinct categories are a must in any organized society for the welfare of its members not only in India but also in any country in the entire world.
We have to take care of two important aspects. Firstly these four classes have come into existence according to the tastes and capacity to work efficiently of the individuals but not on the basis of their birth. ‘Janmane Jayate Sudra’ everyone is born as a Sudra only. Later on his class is determined depending on his qualities. The second aspect is that among these four categories, even if one is missing or weak, the other three cannot function efficiently with the result that the society becomes disintegrated, for example, without legs the body cannot perform its duties properly. So also without the help of the head and shoulders, the trunk cannot exist. Circulation of blood is not confined to a particular part of the body. It is there throughout the body. In order to underline the very significant and important role played by farmers, laborers and other manual workers in the nation building activity, it is said that they are born from the feet of Viratpursha as an index of the society and associated the different sections of the human body to the four varnas which are independent. If the parts of the body quarrel among themselves and refuse to perform their functions the heart may fail which finally may lead to the downfall of the society. Hence, keeping the development of the society as our goal, we should strive for the unity among the people of the classes’. Logical and scientific answer given by Masterji convinced the youngsters.
After worshipping either Vishnu, Shiva or Shakti, we recite Mantrapushpam at the end. What is the significance of Mantrapushpam? We say that God is there in you, in your body and in your spinal cord. We say that God is there in your body and in your spinal cord. We say that God exists in everything. Are we understanding it? are we following it?.
Your realize the importance of cooperative work. Stones, sand, cement etc., are brought for the construction of the building. With that, is the construction activity completed? Engineers, Maistris and laborers are needed. Engineer ha to plan. Maistri has to implement it skillfully. Laborers have to do the manual work. Mason’s work is different in fields. Therefore, we should not lose sight of the fact that for any organization and any work; cooperation and coordination are highly essential.
Unity is very important, the work which cannot be done by a single individual may be performed when that is taken up by many individuals. Suppose a person belonging to a middle class family, due to so many unavoidable circumstances, has to repay a debt of one crore of rupees. As he could not pay it on time, he may get blood pressure on account of mental tension resulting in heart failure. If one core of people come to his rescue, how much will each person pay? Only one rupee. If people face the problems unitedly, they can be solved very easily. Now a days we do anything according to our need. Needs are leading us. Necessity is the mother of invention.
Now a days the distance between individuals is increasing. On one hand we say that world is becoming small, but at the same time the gap between persons is getting wider and wider. This is a paradox indeed! We have forgotten the significance of many of our customs and traditions. We have to explain them to children. What is marriage? It is not two bodies coming together. That is a scared union like that of Parvati and Parameswara or Shiva and Shakti. When couple go to have Padanamaskar of Masterji, worships them assuming them to be Parvathi and Parameswara.
If we want to live prosperously, the stability of the family is essential. Parents should not play cards involving money. Parent’s indecent behavior is the root cause for the downfall of the society.
Why are we celebrating festivals? They are not meant for preparing different varieties of dishes, or snacks and sweets. Festivals should be celebrated in a group. One should invite others.
In olden days, if one house caught fire, the whole village used to come to its rescue. Now a days such a practice has become conspicuous by its absence the moment people hear that a particular house caught fire, they first enquire whether that particular house belonged to their party man or to their opposition party men. Caste feelings are also on the increase. On account of casteism people are developing mutual hatred.
Caste is also utilized for political purposes, which are leading to some drastic results. Hence an individual should be honored or dishonored by caste. Religious leaders also should leave their secluded places, come put and stay in the country and should also be prepared to do likewise. Otherwise they remain useless to the society.
Three knots, three achamanas, three pradakshinas. Without being aware of the significance of the number 3 we are doing all these things. Three stands for our physical, subtle and casual bodies. While doing a thing it will be more appropriate if we are animated by a feeling of unity of the three bodies rather than that of just though, word and deed. Once some people come to Masterji and remarked, “To touch the feet and bow is bourgeois method. It is a symbol of slavery. We must do away with such a practice. We are notable to understand why you are encouraging it.”
Masterji listened to them with tremendous patience and said “Padapuja as you say does not mean worshipping an individual. In no way it reflects slavish mentality. It is never meant as a means to achieve some material benefits. In your view, touching the feet by padanamskaram of a respected person is condemnable. Touching the feet of a Guru signifies the acceptance of Guru’s words and expressing gratitude for the same. If your friend offers a cigarette, you thank him. If he offers a cup of coffee several times you will express your gratefulness. Are you thanking your mother who carried you in her womb for nine months, who gave you good education? Are you thanking your preceptor who gave you good knowledge and was instrumental in developing your personality? If you want to get a small work done, you go and touch the feet of so many persons. According to you, there is nothing wrong in it. It is indeed a surprising thing”.
Again they asked him “people say that you are an incarnation of Dattatreya. Is it not cheating the world?
“I never declared like that. I am Yogi. I do not know what type of power do I have. I am not showing miracles. People say that I am endowed with mysterious powers. The power, which is in the entire universe, is present not only in me but also in every individual. According to me all of you are the embodiments of the Omnipotent God. I respect the genius present in man. I am a human being. You may think that I am an utopian who wishes to turn every individual into a real human being”.
One day one elderly man came to Masterji, his wife was working as a head nurse, was a devoted lady. She used to perform many (ritual) poojas. One day as she was worshipping, suddenly her waist and legs became stiff. Doctors declared that there was no disease as such. At last he came to Masterji. Swamiji listened to him patiently and said “first of all, let her stop doing poojas. Later on I shall explain you”. Everyone was surprised at Masterji’s answer. However, the elderly person quietly left the place. The next day he asked Masterji, “what is the connection between his wife’s pooja’s and her condition of not being able to mover her legs?”.
Masterji replied like this “Recently people are performing poojas and chanting mantras without being initiated by a Guru. They want to possess Siddhis and powers with the help of poojas and mantras. Now this trend is on the increase. When a mantra is recited nerves relating to that beejam (root) will respond. Due to that power will be generated or awakened. Without having sufficient capacity to control that Shakti or power, if we resort to spiritual practices, our body may not b able to bear with that energy. If the energy is only that much which the body could bear, nothing untoward will happen. When the receptive capacity is less and the power generated is more all such perils will occur. If the voltage is high the electric bulb gets fused. So is the body and the spiritual practices. “Viswamjee then have him some Vibuti packets with the instruction to apply or sprinkle it wherever there is pain. He also told him to let her recite the mantra, “OM SRI SAI RAM GURUDEVA DATTA” as many times as possible. Within a period of ten or fifteen days she was able to walk normally. From that time onwards she stopped performing severe rituals, satisfying herself with routine pooja.
Now-a-days people are not able to follow the philosophy of ‘Karma’ properly. They consider it as ‘fatalism’ and attribute everything to the results of happenings in their previous birth and do not make any solid attempt in this birth to counter them. This is a great blunder.
Whatever you do, it will have its won effect, says karma philosophy. One cannot escape from it. Today if you get addicted to drinking and sleep, after five years you will experience its effect with compound interest. You may be hospitalized and even die. Karma philosophy says “Good work will have good effect, bad work will have bad effect.” Hence do good and be good. Hinduism never advocates to keep oneself away from work and remain idle. The only way to overcome the bad effects of bad deeds is to do god. To achieve the best results, good deeds should be performed. Hence be active worker always and never be a passive onlooker.
God is only one. He is omnipotent. There is only one caste, that is the caste of humanity. There is only one Dharma, that is duty. There is only one language, that is language of heart. There is only one religion, that is religion of love.
If you can establish mentally good relationship with a pious Guru, he will serve the purpose of a bridge between you and God and try to fulfill your good wishes. Everyone cannot generate electricity at home. Electrical engineers produce electricity either at Machkhand or Sri Sailam or at some other project, and supply it through electric wires to houses. We have to take care that electric wiring is done properly in the house. Then the electrician comes, tests and certifies that everything is in the proper order. Only then the use will be arranged and electricity will flow. Guru is like the fuse in the circuit. Fuse is a must for safe flow of the current. When the voltage exceeds a particular limit the fuse goes off preventing any fire accident from taking place. So also the teacher takes acre to see that the disciple gets only as much energy through his spiritual practices as he could withstand.
Yogi can cure some of the disease through his Yogic powers. Full faith in Yogi is highly essential.
Once there was a discussion on poets and their works. In order to convey their thoughts more clearly, poets started using figures of speech. “Now they have crossed the limit”, said one young boy. Masterji asked “Where is the proof?”. To convey the thought that in ancient times in Ashrams of Sages, peaceful coexistence prevailed, the writer wrote that elephants, lions, tigers, deers, snakes etc which are notable mutual enemies, lived together in a peaceful atmosphere. It is a hyperbole. Is it really possible?” said the young boy.
Looking at him Masterji gave a broad smile and started, “That is possible. There is no exaggeration in that. Since the sages do not bother about their body, they are fond of their body, they do not take care of its requirements. There is integration between their mind and the universal mind. Even if ordinary people sit in front of them, universal mind will have its influence on them. Then those persons also will be away from the devilish qualities like anger, hatred and jealousy. Thinking that they too are the atoms in the universe, they begin to behave with divine qualities. Hence in the ashrams of sages, the wild and harmful animals lived together.”
He gave a pause and started again “Modern youth are full of suspicions. Immediately they do not believe anything. I do agree that this logical approach is a scientifically approved one. But, if they do not understand anything, they need not misinterpret it and discard it totally. When Mahatma Gandhi went to participate in the round table conference held at London, Emperor George, ministers and parliamentarians wanted to insult him. All of them agreed not to stand when Mahatma entered the conference room. When Mahatma Gandhi was really coming inside Emperor George who was sitting with dignity on a pedestal seat, got up immediately, went to him very quickly, shook his hand and invited him with full honors. After the conference, other members asked King George, “why did you go and honor him which was much against our earlier decision?” George replied coolly, “As soon as I saw him I forgot about our decisions and spontaneously felt like inviting him honorably”. This is a good illustration of Mahatma Gandhi’s personality. When we are practically coming across so many instances how can we say that it was impossible?” Thus youngsters who came to Masterji felt enlightened.
If your mind is full of jealousy and hatred, everything will turn into poison. Hence, at the outset make your mind pure. Fill your mind with love if you want to get rid of your previous birth’s karma, perform good deeds now. Take out the thorn with another thorn. Whether it is a devotee or a Jnani (realized person) karma has to be performed.
One lady questions, “why is my husband reaching home late at midnight? Why does he not greet me?” Masterji’s counter question is “why do you give a chance for such a situation to arise? Unless condition at home improve the development of the society is impossible. Parents should be exemplary so as to be a model for their children to emulate. Our deeds should be under the control of the heart. Only then things will move smoothly”.
“Why was I born” should be the question every individual should address himself to. He should ponder over how others are benefited by him. Intelligentsia should coordinate all their intelligence and energy. There are four primary pillars to divinity. They are Truth, Character, Purity and Unity. Speak with a sweet tongue and in an attractive manner. Talk less. If your speech is pure your words will come true. Purity of mind ensures will power. You can endear yourself to all through love and win their hearts. You reform your families. There may be some who deny God, but none will deny Guru. Guru is virtually God. Worshipping the footwear of Guru is equivalent to worshipping God.
(Message of Sri Viswayogi Viswamjee Sadguru Maharaj delivered on 7-7-1990, on the occasion of Guru Purnima).
It has been age-old custom to honor Guru during Guru puja celebrations, that is on Guru Purnima. That is not a tradition restricted to one particular religion or a particular caste or region. Guru Purnima is a festival to be celebrated by the entire mankind in token of their gratitude to their Gurus. There may be some who do not believe in the existence of God. They may deny God, but they cannot deny the Guru who has molded their personality. Guru Purnima is not a festival concerning Hindus alone. It is a festival concerning every human being.
Guru Purnima has got a special significance. A car driver has learnt the skill of driving from an expert in driving. That expert is the driver’s Guru. One cannot become a driver, or a doctor or an engineer by birth. One should get himself trained in the particular trade by some expert. To such a Guru one should, therefore, be ever grateful.
Let us assume that there is sculptor. There must have been a greater sculptor who was instrumental to bring him to that level. Not only that even in regard to the profession of cooking food, the same theory applies equally well.
Who is Guru? For every individual that Mother is the firs Guru. As soon as the baby has come out of the mother’s womb and opened its eyes, what does it know? Nothing, mother takes the baby on to her lap and feeds it. The food taken up by mother gets transformed into blood which she feeds the baby and brings it up. When the infant in its complete ignorance enjoys playing with its won dirt, the mother picks up the child and fondles it with all affection unmindful of anything else. She takes the utmost personal care of the child and protects it. Therefore mother is the Guru for every individual. It is the first duty of every human being to honor the mother.
Not only that, it is the mother that has introduced the world to the child. Mother explains to the child qualities and properties of things around. For instance, the child learns that the cat drinks milk, the fire burns the finger and so on from his mother. Thus the mother sows the seeds of fundamental knowledge in the mind of the child. That is how the mother becomes the first Guru.
It is only the mother who sows the seed of right type of knowledge in the mind of the child, it grows into a well integrated and self disciplined youth. We are least concerned with the existence of God. Mothers! Please note whether there is God or not, is not our concern. Our only aim is to see that our children grow into good citizens. Let everyone one of use put this question to ourselves, namely, “are we imparting these lessons to our children at home?” Let us ponder and bestow serious thought over it. To teach that people go to different worlds after death is a blunder. There is nothing that one achieves after death. Before this physical body joins the five elements, make best use of it. Make your living purposeful by making the body powerful. It is up to you to observe and conclude, how many homes are really centres of happiness.
Home is the first school. Mother is the first teacher. Father is also a teacher for his child. After coming of age, the child plays marbles or some other game with his friends. When the mother calls him for food, he wants her to wait for sometime. She coolly obeys out of affection. Friend is the second Guru. He obeys the mother. He also listens to the friend. But sometimes he does not listen to the father because he is influenced by his friends. So we have to enquire what sort of friends he has, and what type of habits he is cultivating. When the parents are taking a lot trouble to see that the child becomes either an engineer or doctor, see what the children are doing. They are absconding from classes and going to cinemas wasting hours and hours of their precious time. Some children even studying ninth class are getting habituated to visit bars. Drunkards are becoming victims to liver diseases and peptic ulcers. Alcohol enters the blood and spoils the progeny of the drunkard. This is what the doctors say. The same thing was told by our sages. Modern scientists have concluded that whenever our ancient sages. Modern scientists have conceded that whatever our ancient sages told long ago is scientifically true.
Who is Guru (teacher)? The one which is the biggest or the highest. The one which is the highest and the biggest is the universe. The energy in the universe, especially Guru (teacher) in the universe, manifests itself as knowledge, Guru and knowledge, Guru and universe make their appearance respectively as universe and Guru. Every individual whose mind is filled with knowledge can be said to have attained the status of Guru. Understand clearly and properly. Electric current is present everywhere. Let us assume that is the power which spreads everywhere. That current is processed through the electric bulb. There is a danger with high voltage current which normally flows in main wires. That is concealed in a substation with a “Danger” warning prominently displayed. The same thing which is beneficial to you will sometimes prove harmful. If God is considered as a Jagadguru who is in the infinite state, Guru can be compared to transformer which supplies only that much of electricity, needed for the house. We can receive the power from God who is in the infinite state, through a Guru in the requisite quantity. Now a days some people perform Sahasranamas on their own, become mad and roam on the streets. With the aim of possessing occult powers, they are following the tantric method. What should those people do who acquire wonderful powers? They must utilize them for the welfare of the society. If on the other hand, utilize them only to meet their personal ends, undoubtedly they will become mad. Such powers should, therefore, be used for the sake of the society. What is the aim of Viswayogi Viswamji? His religion is the religion of love. His caste is the caste of humanity. His language is the language of the heart. Sanatana Dharma aims at unifying the people of the universe. For universal brotherhood there are many obstructions. People are separated in the name of countries, castes etc., again in the same caste, there are sub castes. Social conditions have come to such a sorry pass that it has become difficult for four members of one family to stay together. The reason is not far to seek. Culture is just skin deep. It has not taken roots in the mind. The general feeling that modern people are civilized is only more apparent than real.
What is Viswa Yogi doing? He has kept the pictures of all Gods and Goddesses including his won photo in one puja room and worships them all. People are surprised to see this. He garlands you also. Why? “Ekam Sath Vipra Bahudha Vadanty” (Truth is only one but pundits say that is plural). According to that saying Truth is only one but superficially assumes many forms. What really exits, is only one. That cosmic electromagnetic power is God. If efforts are made, to understand it with the help of a Guru, everyone can reach the level of Guru. Jagat Guru does not mean Guru of Jagat (world). The real meaning is that Jagat Guru is one who considers the world (Jagat) as his Guru. Once a person went to Sri Chandra Sekharendra Saraswati Swamy and said “Namaskar to Jagad Guru”. Then he replied “I am considering Jagat(world) as a Guru”. He is the real Jagad Guru! He is the incarnation of Dattatreya.
Embodiments of divine love! You try to put your principles into practice. You try to understand why I have organized the seminar on universal brotherhood, unity of citizens of the world (Viswa Samaikyata Sadassu).
Ocean of honey is here. Do not take it in vessels. Try to rectify your mistakes. First of all you achieve unity within your individual selves. The five sense organs in you pull the mind in different directions. So bring your five sense organs under control. The one who can conquer his won mind can guide the minds of others. Not only this, the mind having high potency can control and monitor the mind of ‘Lower potency’. This is not hypnotism. This is a truth pertaining to yogasastra.
Plans are on for the construction of the edifice of universal brotherhood (Viswamanava Samaikyata Stupam). Very shortly the foundation stone will be laid for the same.
Viswamanava Samaikyata Stupam (the edifice of universal brotherhood) will be constructed very shortly with the formal laying of the foundation stone. My dear human beings! You first become humans. Don’t mind whether you are a Christian or Brahmin or a Reddy or this or that by caste. Introspect whether you are living like a man. It is the ideal of Viswa Yogi to unite all human beings and motivate them to be of service to the society. After the construction of the edifice, a home for the aged called ‘Nave Jeevan’ (new life) will be constructed. Now-a-days old people are not able to adjust themselves in the homes of their sons. The idea is to enable old people to lead a peaceful, contented and happy life. The cottages in which they live will help them to develop their individuality and spend the fag end of their life in a spiritual atmosphere. They will realize the unity in diversity. They will be pace setters to the youth.
Twenty first century will be a golden era for the country. That will start taking shape even from now on. The day is not far off when the man getting rid of all the bad in him starts to treat man as a man. Man will mingle with man as human beings. There will be harmony between America and Russia.
Do not create misunderstanding and rift between man and man. Try to bring about unity between sons and daughters-in-law. Now-a-days police and authorities are projected in a repulsive manner. You condemn such cinemas. While the real culprit is left scot-free and going about dauntlessly, the innocent citizen is living in constant fear. So strengthen yourselves and make the society united and strong.
Once a pundit was going along in a village. A small boy was enjoying himself by pelting stones at him. There was nobody to check the miscreant, the reason being that the boy happened to be the son of a President. There is no one to check bad characters. All are criticizing only good people.
One Swami once advised a cobra not to bite or harm anyone. From that time onwards the cobra stopped biting anyone. Having come to know that the cobras would not bite, some urchins started pelting stones at it. As a result, cobra got hurt all over the body. Feeling helpless the cobra approached the Swami and narrated its tale of woe to him. Then the Swami remarked that his advice was only not to bite but to hiss. The moral is that good people should hiss at bad characters, but never submit to them. Swamiji says that he enjoys seeing himself in all others. You too should attain that status. First of all, behave like a human being. Don’t degrade yourself in the name of caste and behave like a beast. It is a bad practice to enquire about the caste of a person at the time of awarding him with a degree in the university or selecting him for appointment. Give priority to qualification.
Addiction to alcohol is destroying many families. Stop it with immediate effect. Awake from the influence of narcotics. In a way I too may be called mad. While some people are mad after creating rifts in families, Viswayogi’s madness is to make a human being to conduct himself as a human being at home as well as outside, converting every home into a (Prashanti Nilayam) home of peace.
There is neither equality nor equanimity. It may be difficult to bring about either. But unity can be brought about. No five fingers are alike. Despite the limbs being separate, the body is only one. Throughout the body only one type of blood is circulating. Only one heart and one mind are functioning. Similarly unity among different men in the society should be achieved.
Dattatreya Swamy is Sadguru (real teacher). He drew wisdom from the entire universe. One person prepared soup (sambar) in a vessel. He added all the ingredients in the correct proportion to make it tasteful, but he committed one mistake. But that vessel was not cleaned properly. So the soup became poisonous. Similarly, unless your mind is pure, all the spiritual practices you have performed will go waste. Before attempting to reform the society, you reform yourself.
Develop the philosophy of love. Jesus Christ says “love your neighbor like yourself”. There is no other Advaita philosophy than that. The soul that is in you is also present in everyone else. As long as minds are pure, there is no religion which is bad. Minds must be pure. Viswa Yogi says “what you can safely give me are your bad qualities. Leave them with me. I am giving you Divine Blessings, don’t forget work is worship and duty is God. Intelligentsia must tighten their belts and get ready to propagate the values of Sanatana Dharma keep those as your ideals namely, Truth, Chastity, Purity and Unity”.
So far we have the nectar of the message of Sri Viswayogi Viswamji. We can clearly perceive how the sayings of Viswamji are different than those of others like him. In his approach there is a distinct novelty which we do not find in that of others. All other Mahatmas overstress the aspect of spirituality in human life. Whereas Masterji gives priority to the physical aspect. “First things first. Ground realities is the message of Viswamji. He does not approve of living in dreamland or wool gathering. He insists on development of the mind before aiming at the spiritual development of mind. First of all mind should be brought under control. Human being must learn how to live like a human being. He should reform himself and his family. Only then he can make his home, a center of peace and sublime bliss. Due to untiring efforts of Masterji many devotees are benefited.
