CHILDHOOD – BEGINNING OF EDUCATION

 

After the death of Sri Anjaneyulu, Sri Satyanarayana went to Chavallamudi along with his sister-in-law, the children and his aunty. He performed the obsequies of Sri Anjaneyulu in that village, according to the custom. After three months Smt. Varalakshmamma was taken to her birthplace, Pelluru, by her parents and was there for nine months. She was so depressed with grief, that she not only had no proper sleep and diet, but also lost interest in taking care of the months old baby and in the world around. No one could bring back her to the normal condition. She was awfully   reduced. At Pelluru, Masterji was reared by his elder maternal uncle Seshayya and grandmother    Venkamma. There was one ryot by name,   Madderberi Venkata Subbaya near the house of his grandfather Venkata Ramanayya. There were two cows in their house. Among the two, one was black in color and the other, white in color, the former gave milk in the morning and the latter in the afternoon. Grandmother Venkamma brought the milk from them and fed the child. At the ninth month the baby was gradually introduced to food and coffee.

 

Varalakshmamma returned to Chavallamudi for the annual ceremonies of Sri Anjaneyulu. There Seetamma, the aunty of Sri Anjaneyulu and his mother’s sister Chinna Varalakshmamma looked after the child. It took nearly three to four years, for Varalakshmamma to come back to her normal self. The parental love enjoyed by every child, in the nature course was thus denied to Masterji during this period. He was denied even the love and affection of his elder brother as he as away at Guntur pursuing his studies. Giving himself up to the villagers, Masterji enjoyed their love and affection.

 

In his childhood, with the rose coloured skin, wide dark eyes, black hair, long nose, even smiling rose coloured lips adoring the optimum sized mouth, his face was very beautiful and attractive. His look was deep to the heavens, his smiles were the answers to somebody. He had his early education at his uncle Satyanarayana in the elementary school at Chavallamudi. He was very smart at his studies. He never mingled with the children around, nor quarreled with them. He never made any teasing or unreasonable demands to anything. Also he did not have any preferences in regard to eatables. Without a wink usually he got immersed in deep thought, enjoying dignified loneliness. He was more intimate to his elder sister, Hemarekha than to his eldest sister. There was not much difference in the age between the two, so they were closer. They used to go to the school hand-a-hand. They were at Chavallamudi up to their eight-year. They had occasional visits to Pelluru, their mother’s place of birth. After the marriage of Vidyasagar Sarma in 1950, he joined in Secondary grade training course at Guntur. So they shifted their family to Guntur in 1951to a rented house in A.T.Agraharam. Sri Satyanarayana joined as a teacher in Panduranga Vidyalayam in Brodipet and Sri Viswamjee continued his studies from there.

 

Satyanarayana worked in that school for a long time and earned a name as a teacher of par excellence. He taught Bhagavat Geeta slokas, prayer songs and poems. He wrote several Satakams among them “Andhra Tanaya” and “Gandhi Deva” were very popular. He was awarded the title “Madhura Kavi” (Sweet Poet) by Sri Palle Poorna Pragyanacheryulu. His poetic compositions were broadcast several times in AIR. He was appointed as “Bhakti Pracharak”. He authored Harikathas. Among them “Sri Raghavendra Swami”, “Godagoochi” were prominent. He was an exponent in rendering Harikathas. Once he was enacting the Harikatha “Godagoochi” at Saradaniketan on the request of Sri Unnava Lakshmi Narayan and Smt Rambayamma. His guru Sri Ambatipudi Ramanadham Bhagavatar was there at that time. He felt so over joyed by the performance of his Sishya, that he spontaneously hugged him with tears of joy in his eyes and blessed him in beautiful poetry rendered extempore.

 

The poem speaks of the greatness of the personality of Sri Satyanarayana. He is a Karma yogi interested in doing good to all without any desire of the fruit thereof. That same person who from the very young age with unusual boldness could face several difficulties and troubles, today due to old age, appears to be a person devoid of mental stability. Befitting the blessings(“Live long and earn name and fame”), he looked after the family of his brother well, with all affection and responsibility, performed the marriage of his elder daughter Seetaramamma with her maternal uncle Pelluri Satyanarayana, performed the marriage of Vidyasagar Sarma and finally handed over the responsibility of the family to him. With that satisfaction, he is living happily with his wife and children in his own house in A.T. Agraharam. Even to day, he oversees the welfare of his brother’s family, day in and day out with unique affection.

 

Vidyasagar Sarma admitted his brother Viswam in Pattabhipuram High School (aided) in Second Form. Sarma was jobless at that time. While undergoing his secondary grade training, he eked out his livelihood and incidentally that of the family, by the earnings he got from private tuitions. The family being dependent on hard earning of one individual, it was occasionally subject to severe financial constrictions. Viswam could not be provided even with minimum decent dress that a school going boy needs. In those days A.T. Agraharam was not developed as it is seen today. There were only a few houses, here and there interspersed stretches of open space with wild growth of shrubs and bushes, open drains and snake hills. There were no streetlights. Viswamjee had to trod in knee deep mud and water during the rainy days, with a carrier in one hand and books in the other, walk for over three kilometers crossing the two railway lines to attend school at Pattabhipuram.

 

In the beginning, Viswamjee was not at home with English and Mathematics and his performance in these subjects was made up. By dint of hard work and self-effort gradually he acquired proficiency in these subjects. He studied B.A (Maths) and B.Ed., with Maths and English and in a short span of time he earned name as a good teacher both in Moths and English. His work was appreciated both by students as well as inspecting officers. In tune with his experience he now teaches everybody.  Where there is liking there won’t be any difficulty in doing anything. One should not lose mental balance, simply because he cannot understand certain things at first instance. One should take interest and develop liking for it.

 

From the very childhood he used to have immense love for the poor and downtrodden. Whenever a person is seen suffering from fever, he sits by his side serving him. Whenever anyone is having headache Masterji is massaging his head. Whenever someone gave him money he spent it on the needy. Whenever a beggar came to their door he gave him a handful of rice with love, inspire of the inmates of the house shouting at him to go away. There was a cat in their house, it goes around the house while they were eating. Notwithstanding the caution of elders “Don’t feed a cat. It will get accustomed to it. It longs for the death of the giver”, he fed it with morsels of food. It used to sit in his lap and Viswamjee enjoyed the beauty of the manifestation, with an all-knowing smile.

 

There was one fat dog, red in colour in that house. It was very faithful and never allowed any new comer to enter the premises. Masterji was surreptitiously feeding it with food and jaggery. One day Viswamjee was silently reading something. Suddenly the dog started barking. Naturally the people in the house came out and were stunned to see that the new comer was the six feet long brown Cobra dancing (over its abode) with its brood hood wide open. It was the talk of the people there that a Divine Serpent was living in that snake hill. Nobody saw it so far. They guessed so by the odour so similar to that of Jasmine and Moghali flowers emanating from that place. As soon as the people in the house did the devotional Namaskar to it, it left the place and retreated into the hill. Everyone was thankful to the dog for its pre-notion. Later the dog died on account of some disease. Viswamjee personally carried the mortal body to the fields and was so depressed and grief stricken at the instance that it took ten days for him to regain his normal spirits and take food as usual. Viswamjee while studying III form secured the scholarship of the famous Late Adurti Rama Rao Pantulu, who belonged to the Yagnavalkya Sakha. The scholarship was intended for poor students. Viswamjee enjoyed the scholarship till he completed his B.A. It had given the needed financial support to some extent.

 

As he grew up in years, his understanding of men and matters became sharp. With silent observation he commenced his search for truth. He could not reconcile his inherited faith in God with the facts of life that he was witnessing all round. Cheating, hatred, egoism, the izam of beaurocracy, the overbearing power and pelf, the ruse of the mendicant and its consequent effect on others sometimes leading to disbelief in God and host of questions crossed his mind.  “Does God really exist? The people given to themselves to injustice and misappropriation, honoured and occupying highest posts! Why good people are facing difficulties”? When all are children of God, why this distinction of rich and poor? Do the sins accrued by their acts, like cold blooded murders, cheating others in self interest, earning money by foul means, washed away by mere perambulation around the temples and monetary offerings to God? Is God so ignominious as to surrender himself to bribes? His emotions roused, his burning quest, fanned by the artifice of the mendicant’s for eking out their livelihood, by the dirty tricks adopted by money mongers, and by animosity of the quarrelling brothers, couples, fathers and sons ignoring their blood relationship. On one side the doubt whether God really exists, on the other the faith in God inherited from generations as a constituent of his blood, weighed against each other asserting their supremacy. Viswamjee thought, “It is better to serve man, the creation of God in his own form, than to worship a stony idol” and began his search for human values cultivating in himself the proper attitude for service and the sentiment “Service to living beings is service to the Omniscient. He was a regular visitor to Anjaneya and Sainath temples in Kothapet, Guntur. He developed acquaintances with Sadhus and Saints visiting the place, served them in need with a keen observation of their talk and walk.

 

Viswamjee was not sturdy in his childhood. Any bit of overeating resulted in indigestion and diarrhea. He took only that kind of food, which was easily digestible. He took limited food. During the period of his study for the degree, he was frequently subjected to giddiness and spells of unconsciousness. His mother was afraid and got him treated for it. Unable to find any relief from it, his elder sister Seetaramamma approached the neighbor, a Brahmin, who fastened the Dattatreya Yantra regularly for eleven weeks, and asked Viswamjee to do Namajapa of Shirdi Sai. As a result there was a considerable improvement in his health.

 

One day while perambulating around the Anjaneya temple at Kothapet, he became unconscious and fell down. The priests and the people there gathered around him. As soon as the Akshatas were placed on his head and the sanctified Teertham of Sai were dropped into his mouth, he became conscious and got up. Similar instance took place while he was writing the Math paper in B.A. 3rd year exams. Unable to understand that Viswamjee was occasionally going into trance by virtue of his good deeds of his previous births, people were afraid that he was subjected to fits.

 

By the grace of Sai, the occasional giddiness did not occur more. He took utmost care in taking food. He understood by experience then itself that one could improve one’s health by regulation of food intake. He avoided curries, pulses, eatables etc. He took only Satvic food. He did not take even fruits adequately. He consumed two to three glassfuls of buttermilk everyday. He was lean and tall may be due to his constitution or lack of balanced food. Once his sister-in-law Kamalamma went along with Viswamjee to a Doctor at Pattabhipuram to get herself examined. While returning she asked the Doctor on lighter vein “please prescribe one good tonic, to Viswam to become stout”. In a jocular tone Doctor said “let him eat all those things which I gave to you, he will become stout”. At that time she was a bit stout. To reduce herself and to overcome weakness, she frequently visited the doctor for treatment. The, when he was eating food he was lean, now after stopping the intake of food he is becoming stout :- a paradox, and Kamalamma occasionally enjoys a hearty laugh by recapitulating the words of doctor.

 

After the marriage of Hemarekha, his second sister, when Viswamjee was in II year degree in Hindu College, Vidyasagar Sarma left for Hyderabad to prosecute his studies for M.A., leaving behind his brother and mother in the house of his elder sister Seetaramamma in A.T. Agraharam.
